Part of the Urbana Parks District, the Anita Purves Nature Center is an environmental education facility open free to the public. Walk trails through the woods, sit in the Observation Room and watch the birds, visit with the owls and turtles. It’s a great place where kids have fun learning.
Gardens at SE corner of Florida & Lincoln
Run by the university. At least part of it is dedicated to testing plant species, many of which become available for public purchase within a few years. Also contains Japan House, http://www.art.uiuc.edu/galleries/japanhouse/.
The U of I recreational sports center. Fantastic place for all kinds of exercise including indoor and outdoor Olympic-size pools.
Meadowbrook Park
An expensive piece of land that features walking trails, a prairie restoration project, public gardens, a sculpture garden, and a giant play area for kids.
Operated by the Urbana Parks Disctrict, the UAC features a series of indoor pools that are open to the public. Features a recreational pool, competition pool, slides, diving boards, changing rooms and lockers, gallery seating, and rooms for party rentals.
On Perkins, close to Cunningham. $30/year (or $3 for a day) for CU residents, $60/$5 for others. Ten acres, good for taking your dog for a run without a leash.
Wandell Sculpture Garden
Located in south Urbana along Windsor Road and Race Street
Wide green spaces with big shady hickory trees are the perfect place to play Frisbee with your dog, kids, or friends. Hear sounds of children playing in the huge playground while you relax by the Prayer for Rain fountain.
