Lighting Artist
Volition, the THQ studio that developed the Saints Row and Red Faction franchises, is seeking an experienced and passionate lighting artist to contribute to the visual style and goals of our next AAA project. The Lighting Artist will work with the Product Art Director and production artists to present art content in a manner that communicates gameplay as well as mood. In addition, the Lighting Artist will collaborate with rendering programmers and technical artists to capitalize on the feature set of the next iteration on our advanced rendering engine.
Responsibilities
- Establish local color balance and material standards with all of the art disciplines
- Meet the quality standards as established by the project leads across varying consoles and display technologies; balance these targets against runtime performance and recommend changes where necessary
- Develop lighting standards for large, evolving exterior environments, interiors as well as cinematics
- Collaborate with design in the development of lighting support for gameplay sequences
- Provide feedback on the developing tools and pipelines for lighting the game world
- Mentor other artists in the application of good lighting standards
Qualifications
- Fluent knowledge of at least one major 3D software package (Max, Maya, XSI)
- Strong understanding of Digital Lighting, Color Theory, Balance/Contrast and Emotive response
- Demonstrated initiative and strong problem-solving skills
- 3+ years experience in the game industry or 6+ years in 3D computer graphics industry
- Experience in post effects and compositing is recommended
Other information
Sample Work Required:
- Samples, demonstrations or documentation of toolspipelines developed to overcome past challenges
- Strong art portfolio demonstrating proficiency and talent with both CG and traditional art skills (Preferably via online or CD/DVD) is encouraged, but not required
Relocation to Champaign, Illinois is required. All samples must be accompanied by a description of each, with specific information on what you were responsible for, what tools were used, etc.
